Free Manure

It’s late in the day on Wednesday and I’ve promised to write something every week. Were I still on East Coast time, I’d have missed my own deadline, but I’m in New Mexico right now, smelling the sage brush and hearing absolutely no traffic sounds.

I love visiting this state; it has it’s own slightly askew culture. You can buy fireworks or get a cheeseburger with green chili on it, keep a horse in your backyard or ride one to work. Feces is given away without the expectation of payment and instead of cereal, people eat burritos for breakfast.

Folks here like their pick up trucks very, very old, preferably from the Eisenhower administration.

And yet, as much fun as I have here, this trip is part of my job: Reason 43 why IT’S GREAT TO BE A PROGRAMMER.

I’ve many times considered writing an entire blog post about the good reasons to pursue a career in technology, but that might come across as gloating and thus not in my nature. No.

I’ll just say, in parting, that we programmers can get our work done anywhere, mostly, and that’s part of what allows me to come to New Mexico and work with very cool people.
